Welcome
Glad to see you!
There are various things to look at here – bits and pieces about what I do (web design, photo restoration, training etc.), a little about where we live and work, and some random stuff which is really me letting off steam , or praising or condemning some software or service I have discovered.
Enjoy the trip…
Size matters
With ever increasing memory available how much memory a hard drive has can be hard to imagine. Let’s try and put it into an imaginable scale. Most of use are fairly familiar now with how much data goes on a CD – quite a bit. Take an average supermarket CD, that holds 700mb. Let’s use that as our measure.
Starting at the bottom, data is measured in bits and:
8 bits = 1 byte
1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte (kb)
1024 kilobytes = 1 megabyte (mb) – 700 of these on a CD
1024 megbytes = 1 gigabyte (gb) – about 1.5 CDs
1024 gigabytes = 1 terabyte (tb) – about 1500 CDs!
1024 terabytes = 1 petabyte (pb) – about 1.5 million CDs!!!
and there are more after this!
Data storage is getting cheaper thank goodness and will get cheaper still. With our software and data needing more and more of it that can only be a good thing.
Software – good useful stuff
Software that I use and rate as 5 star – some of it you buy, some of it is free – all of it is really useful (well to me at any rate!)
Artisteer – graphical web design software, especially good for Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal
Coffeecup – various options HTML editing, form design etc.
Photoshop CS3
Filezilla – free FTP transfer software
Roboform – free trial, fantastic for all those passwords!
